China and Ag Trade Pt 1
From the Ag Information Network, I’m Bob Larson. Trade is getting a lot of talk in the news when it comes to our biggest trading partners like Mexico and Canada, but China is in a league of their own.U.S. Representative Dan Newhouse says the first round of tariffs during Trumps first term haven’t gone away, so the ag industry is watching closely …
NEWHOUSE … “Well, certainly the wounds from 2018 are still fresh. And China is a big trading partner of the United States. So, absolutely we’re keeping a close eye on what’s happening there, particularly as aluminum and steel are going into place.”
As a member of the House Ag Committee, Newhouse says China’s getting a lot of attention …
NEWHOUSE … “In fact, I’m meeting with some representatives of the White House right after I get off the call with you, and we’ll be relating those concerns to them as well.”
But agriculture, Newhouse says is just the beginning …
NEWHOUSE … “China, as you know, is kind of a, hmmm how would you say, a challenge to us in so many different ways. Trying to impact their behavior, the things that they’re doing, not only in trade but in so many other things. They’re a particularly difficult country to deal with.”
Tune in tomorrow for more on the challenges China presents from a trade perspective.
