From the Ag Information Network, I’m Bob Larson. Sustainability is a word you hear in conversations a lot more today in agriculture than you did even 5-10 years ago.

John Mesko, CEO at the Potato Sustainability Alliance, says sustainability was kind of a buzzword until a few years ago, now it’s something everyone is talking about ...

MESKO … “It’s part of every conversation that we’ve had here. I mean, I was looking through the agenda of all the talks of the Potato Expo, easily 75% of them are clearcut sustainability topics.”

Sustainability, Mesko says covers so many different aspects of agriculture …

MESKO … “Everybody understands that sustainability is more than just making the environment better. It’s making business better, it’s making communities better, it’s moving our society forward really, because we have a growing population, we have pressure on our ability to produce food, so we have to get better. We can’t just stay the same. We have to improve and expand our capacity.”

And, Mesko says we are getting better every day …

MESKO … “I would say we are fully engaged in our mission of, you know, streamlining the reporting process, helping to measure and define sustainability, and then ultimately report that to the value chain.”

Tune in tomorrow for more on the Potato Sustainability Alliance and what lies ahead for the members and the industry.
