Farm Bill in 2025 - NPC Pt 2
From the Ag Information Network, I’m Bob Larson. Into our second year without a new Farm Bill, many in agriculture are clinging to the hope that we’ll get it done in 2025.
National Potato Council CEO, Kam Quarles says it won’t be easy, but staying focused on getting it done is the right way to go …
QUARLES … “I think everybody agrees that doing a full Farm Bill, going through the regular process, that is the way to really get things done in a thoughtful, comprehensive way.”
As for talks in some circles that a Farm Bill isn’t necessary, Quarles that’s no good …
QUARLES … “And it’s a frustrating situation. We’re already into the second year of an extension of the existing Farm Bill. And for folks out there who are questioning why we need a Farm Bill in the future, to me that’s a little bit of an entitlement mentality. Those are folks who believe that your grocery store creates your food.”
So, when push comes to shove, Quarles says we don’t have much of a choice …
QUARLES … “We have to update our federal policies because foreign competitors around the world, they are certainly updating theirs. And their goal is a singular one. It’s to put our farmers out of business. And we’re either going to compete or we’re going to go extinct.”
Quarles says folks have got to get serious about this, get back on the playing field, and get the new Farm Bill done.
