From the Ag Information Network, I’m Bob Larson. The ag industry is watching closely to see how Congress uses the budget reconciliation process to separate and fund certain parts of the current Farm Bill.

Kam Quarles, CEO at the National Potato Council, says with all of the politics, it will be challenging …

QUARLES … “It is likely to carry the tax cuts as well as government spending reductions. And, because it may be the only train leaving the station this year, it may carry pieces of the Farm Bill.”

Of course, Quarles says the program crops will get priority, but …

QUARLES … “If they take care of those issues, and also do a bunch of nutrition cuts in that reconciliation bill, it makes it really challenging to do anything further on the Farm Bill, not impossible, but challenging.”

But specialty crops, Quarles says want to be involved …

QUARLES … “If that’s the only train leaving the station, we want to be on it for specialty crops. No subsector of agriculture has gone through more change and volatility since the last Farm Bill was signed into law in 2018. And, we certainly want to see investments in the key areas that make fruits and vegetables that much more competitive.”
