COVID-19 Recovery Pt 3

I’m Bob Larson. As harvest season fast approaches, farmers and others in the ag supply chain struggle to meet all of the required safety measures in the attempt to limit the spread of COVID-19 coronavirus.

U.S. Representative Dan Newhouse says if necessary, Congress might have to figure out further assistance plans to help keep everyone’s head above water…

NEWHOUSE … “I think there’s a lot of people watching and monitoring the situation so that we can respond if more aid is necessary. I can’t say that absolutely there will be, but if the need presents itself and it’s clear that more is necessary in order to keep a strong agricultural industry, then I think a lot of people will step up to the plate and make that happen.”

Newhouse admits things are pretty tough right now, but believes we’ll make it out of this …

NEWHOUSE … “You know, I’m trying to be optimistic but realistic as well. We’ve got our supply chains have been interrupted. Our markets have been interrupted. And, there’s a lot of challenges that we face in agriculture. So, if in fact, all of those things continue to come together as the harvest season approaches and we still are struggling, I’m hopeful that we can make that case and that Congress will there for the American farmer when they need them.”

Newhouse says with cherry harvest beginning and other crops quickly ripening, we’re going to have to make sure we have a sufficient workforce in place and be sure we can move the products to the necessary ports.
