From the Ag Information Network, I’m Bob Larson. Sustainability in farming is no longer just a catch phrase, it’s the way more and more farms are operating every day.

John Mesko, CEO at the Potato Sustainability Alliance, says they help improve the economic, environmental and social aspects of potato production in the U.S. and Canada …

MESKO … “We are at a point where our momentum is growing and farmers are coming to us, member companies are coming to us, or potential member companies I should say, because they understand that we have a program that actually validates the things that are happening on farms and allows that sustainability story to get told.”

And those stories, Mesko says can now be verified …

MESKO … “This year we are launching a verification of the program which is kind of exciting because big retailers like Walmart, for example, have that as a requirement, that if you want to sell them product those potatoes need to be sourced from a verified sustainability program.”

Mesko says it’s really pretty simple …

MESKO … “Sustainability is another way of saying, good business practices, right. And a lot of things that impact sustainability are inefficiency, extra costs, extra effort maybe that is not, if we can eliminate those things, business is going to be more successful in general.”

Again, that is John Mesko, CEO of the Potato Sustainability Alliance.
