From the Ag Information Network, I’m Bob Larson. The ‘One Big Beautiful Bill’ and the ‘Marketing Access for Specialty Crops’ program have delivered some much needed help for struggling farmers.

But Kam Quarles, CEO at the National Potato Council, says more help could be coming IF we can update our 2018 farm bill …

QUARLES … “As I understand it, the Chairman of the House Ag Committee, Mr. Thompson has been indicating that he wants to get to actually doing a farm bill here in the fall time when Congress comes back from its August recess.”

But as we’ve seen in the past, Quarles says that won’t be easy …

QUARLES … “Ultimately, unlike the reconciliation bill, to get a farm bill to the President’s desk is going to require folks on both sides of the aisle, a bipartisan effort, to put all this together because you’re certainly going to lose votes from the extremes on the right and the left.”

The moderates, Quarles says will really need to step in and

say, ENOUGH …

QUARLES … “It’s really the folks in the middle are the ones who always deliver the farm bill. It’s anybody’s guess as to where that bipartisanship is going to come from in a very contentious Congress, but I think the leaders of the Ag Committees are going to give it their best shot here when we get back from the August recess.”

That’s Kam Quarles, CEO of the National Potato Council.
