I’m Lacy Gray with Washington Ag Today.

A year ago at a Washington State Potato Commission long term strategic planning meeting the subject of promoting not only the importance of potatoes but the importance of agriculture in general was brought to the table. Ryan Holterhoff, Director of Marketing & Industry Affairs for the WSPC, says that from that discussion a new campaign was created.

HOLTERHOFF: We started thinking about what that could look like, and what that might be and realized that it would be important to identify voices from around ag in order to make this a true state wide effort.

Holterhoff says at that time the WSPC was joined by the Washington Wheat Growers Association and together created the Washington Grown campaign. Holterhoff explains.

HOLTERHOFF: It’s a pretty broad campaign that we’re looking to help tell the true story of agriculture - to look for opportunities to enhance the trust that consumers have in the overall food production system here throughout our state and be able to help them see the importance that it does provide to each and every one of our lives, whether they’re working on a farm or not. With that in mind, there are conversations going on out there about agriculture, some good, some bad, some indifferent, but we felt it’s important to make sure that our farmers and ranchers throughout the state of Washington have a venue where they can help tell their story. So we’re looking at this as an opportunity to connect with people, create partnerships and most importantly make sure the voices of the ag industry are heard.

Wagrown.com has been up roughly a month. Holterhoff says traffic to the site has been good and that the most impressive thing they are seeing is the amount of time that people are spending on the website.

HOLTERHOFF: They’ll learn a lot about the food that is produced and how that relates to them, and the care and the effort that is taken to make sure they have the best food from our growers and ranchers here.
