The Peanut Digging Decision
We're into that time of year when the question in a peanut field isn't whether harvest is coming. It's when to dig.
After a whole growing season getting the crop this far, those last few days can make a difference in what ultimately goes into the basket.
Peanut maturity clinics are underway in Georgia, with some running throughout September. Alabama Extension is also holding pod-blast workshops into early October, all aimed at helping growers zero in on that digging decision.
UF/IFAS calls determining when to dig one of the most important economic decisions a peanut grower makes. Peanuts on the same plant don't all mature at once, so simply counting days after planting doesn't necessarily tell you what's happening below those vines.
Maturity checks give growers a better picture of how far that crop has actually come and help narrow down the right harvest window.
