Green Revolution Part 3

Green Revolution Part 3

Welcome to Vine to Wine this is your host Linda Moran. Today we continue to discuss how the wine industry is participating in the green revolution.

In the real estate world it is all about location. In the wine world it is a great deal about packaging. It is astounding how much money the wine industry spends on designing labels and the look of a wine in an effort to please us the consumer. But wine packaging is increasingly influenced by the effects of packaging on everything from greenhouse emissions to recycle-ability. The wine industry has for years examined the impact of producing, packaging and transporting wines. It is of no shock that the most recent studies have shown transportation of wine and package weight contributes most significantly to a negative impact on the environment. So can we expect to see more wine in a box and Tetra Pack containers? Can we expect to see lighter weight glass? Yes definitely. But then again are we the consumers ready to participate? I mean, we are such snobs - we think if a wine is in a heavy bottle it must taste better than the same wine in a lighter bottle. The wine industry has for years struggled with their desire to be environmentally responsible and the need to be competitive in the market. Trust me the cost of those heavier bottles and the increased cost to transport them, is being passed on to us. When will we be ready to support the wine industry in their efforts to go green? I’m just asking & Email your wine questions to Linda at vine to wine dot net and thank you for joining me on today’s Vine to Wine.
