Harvest Relief
From the Western Ag Network, I’m Bob Larson. Farmers need the help provided by the Harvest Fuel Relief program, but National Farmers Union President Rob Larew says it is only a temporary fix.In his view, Larew says a longer-term solution would be
found in passing the right kind of farm bill …
LAREW … “We continue to be at a huge risk of losing a generation of farmers. Not only those who are struggling right now, but if you think about young folks looking at this industry right now, how can they, with any certainty, want to take on this kind of challenge? I think that's a big
concern that we should all be looking at.”
Lawmakers will have a full agenda when they come back after the midterm election.
For agriculture, that list includes the farm bill, year-round E15, and another bridge assistance package, but Larew remains hopeful …
LAREW … “When I talk to Republican and Democratic leaders for the Ag Committees, there's at least a willingness to try to work through the differences that they have right now. There's dialog going on at a staff level. I think that's encouraging, but even with that kind of hopefulness, I think the odds are still tough just because there are going to be so few days to get all of this wrapped up before the end of the year.”
Larew’s number one message to everyone in Rural America is to get out and vote and make it count.
