Pear Consumption Boost
From the Ag Information Network, I’m Bob Larson with today’s Fruit Grower Report. Consumers often say they’re looking for a healthier lifestyle with more exercise and a better diet. And that, according to Pear Bureau Northwest’s president and CEO, CarrieAnn Arias, is part of a new campaign to help consumers understand that pears can be part of your healthier diet …
ARIAS … “Well, we’re always going to focus on pear sales, right. We want those returns to the grower, but it’s really consumption. You want to increase consumption, and that is going to lend itself to more pear sales.”
But consumption, Arias says is a behavioral change …
ARIAS … “And so, really, we’re looking at consumer behavior to make sure that we’re creating something that is consistent in a person’s lifestyle where they go to a pear. It becomes part of their shopping list, it’s in their basket on a regular basis. That’s going to translate into sales because we need sales for the long-term not just the short-term.”
So, besides being tasty, Arias says pears are healthy …
ARIAS … “You know, it does have six grams of fiber in a medium pear and fiber is really very important for consumers. Most consumers in the United States don’t eat enough. And a pear a day is definitely a way to get to that fiber number that many consumers are trying to hit.”
And Arias says there no shortage of options …
ARIAS … “Part of it too becomes that awareness of the varieties that have existed for a very long time that maybe just need a new reintroduction to consumers.”
Again, that’s CarrieAnn Arias, president and CEO at Pear Bureau Northwest.
