From the Ag Information Network, I’m Bob Larson. There has been a lot of talk since the new Dietary Guidelines were released, and most of it from the ag industry has been positive.

Kam Quarles, CEO of the National Potato Council, says it’s really nice to see potatoes getting recognized again as the healthy vegetable that it is, but …

QUARLES … “There’s other information in the Dietary Guidelines related to processed potato products that we want to have an ongoing discussion with not only the folks who produce those products but also the administration to make sure that the information surrounding those processed products is grounded in sound science.”

So, Quarles says seriously consider where you get that information …

QUARLES … “It’s not helpful if, at the end of the day, the nutrition information that’s provided to Americans comes from the folks who have the loudest voice on social media but not the most grounding in sound science as well as just kind of common sense, can folks implement this in their diets.”

But the new guidelines, Quarles says are laid out pretty well …

QUARLES … “They’ve completely redone the info graphic intended to inform consumers, so that, kind of that top line visual. It’s going to hang in schools all over the country.”

Quarles says it’s amazing how far we’ve come, considering where potatoes were just a few years ago under previous administrations.
