From the Ag Information Network, this is today’s Fruit Grower Report. The tree fruit industry will be gathering in Yakima December 9-11 for the 120th WSTFA Annual Meeting and Hort Show.

And given all the challenges they face, WSTFA President Jon DeVaney says there will be plenty to cover …

DeVANEY … “This is not a passive event. You spend a little time sitting in chairs and listening to presentations, but there’s a lot of question and answer that goes on and a lot of conversation with industry colleagues in the halls and at events in the evenings afterwards.”

And, as always, there will be the Batjer Address …

DeVANEY … “Dr. Gary Grove, an imminent plant pathologist at WSU is going to be recapping some of the things learned over his career and based on his experience where he sees the industry headed in some of these areas of maintaining fruit quality and preventing decay and other similar issues.”

And, DeVaney says quality is key …

DeVANEY … “Ensuring that we have maximum quality is one of those areas where we as an industry can take some steps that will allow us to find the profit that may exist out there.”

DeVaney says it’s harder and harder to find, but it does exist …

DeVANEY … “By choosing some of our practices and making investments to maximize getting the fruit that you produce in those areas of the manifest and at the higher quality levels, you know, Jeff is emphasizing at the meeting that that’s where there’s still opportunities to be had.”
