Leadership Difference Pt 1
From the Ag Information Network, I’m Bob Larson. Reducing worker turnover and improving morale on your farm can be as simple creating a spreadsheet to track who you talk with and when.Dave Mitchell, Founder and President of the Leadership Difference, base in Walla Walla, says you can’t be afraid to talk and listen to each and every employee …
MITCHELL … “One of the things I talk about a lot is not falling guilty to the “no news is good news” mentality, which I think is very easy to do. I mean I, as a leader myself, I, you know, sometimes fall in that trap of, oh I’m not going to go looking for trouble if it doesn’t rear its head.”
But, Mitchell says, workers often assume the boss knows everything, so …
MITCHELL … “You’ve got to kind of go assertively out and talk to people and invite criticism. That’s true about your customers as well, but certainly with your employees. You know, tell me how we can be better. Tell me what, you know, impedes you, you know, in any way. You know, how can I be a more effective leader for you.”
Mitchell says it’s more important now than ever …
MITCHELL … “The reality is, particularly in the environment right now where labor is so precious and people have so many options, not just within agriculture but going to another type of work that may be less strenuous or less
physically demanding. You’ve got to hold on to this talent.”
