From the Ag Information Network, this is today’s Fruit Grower Report. Farmers and ranchers in our state are facing a new level of expenses and regulations, thanks in large part to a lack of understanding about agriculture.

Save Family Farming’s new Executive Director, Ben Tindall says their mission is to educate the non-farm public …

TINDALL … “Save Family Farming has really been a key player in the state arena as far as engaging on the labor issue. Not just from the farm employer’s side but also the farm worker and the employee’s standpoint of protecting farm workers, protecting their rights, protecting their ability to provide for their family.”

Recent efforts, Tindall says were highlighted during the last legislative session by the farm workers themselves …

TINDALL … “Save Family Farming helped host several farm worker rallies throughout the state and literally hundreds of farm workers showed up to, one, protest the increase of overtime, the overtime regulations and just the limitations that they’re now faced with the hours that they can work before that overtime kicks in, which is causing a lot of employers to have to reduce hours which is then hurting those farm workers.”

So, Tindall says they just need to understand …

TINDALL … “These may have been good-intended regulations and legislation, but it’s had a very negative impact on these workers and their families.”

Tune in tomorrow for more on Washington’s new overtime rules and Save Family Farming’s efforts to help folks understand why they’re not working.
