From the Ag Information Network, this is today’s Fruit Grower Report. Folks in the ag industry understand why paying overtime for seasonal work is a bad idea.

Ben Tindall, the new Executive Director at Save Family

Farming, says the new overtime laws may have been well-intended, but they’ve had a very negative impact on the workers and their families …

TINDALL … “Save Family Farming has been very active in giving voice to these workers and making sure that their voice is shared to the legislators.”

Fortunately, Tindall says the workers have been on board with trying to educate those outside of the ag industry …

TINDALL … “We had several rallies throughout the state and then also in Olympia during the session where we literally had about 300 farm workers come out and speak to legislators and their voice was heard. And that was a powerful thing that we will be continuing to see if we can help raise up some leaders and help give them voice and share their stories.”

Bottom line, Tindall says it’s increased regulations like these …

TINDALL … “… that are unfortunately putting an average of, what is it, 14 farms per week out of business in our state. That is devastating and how do we get that information, not just the doom and gloom message, but here are the struggles that farmers are facing. Here are, like I said, potentially even well-intentioned regulations that are in place that are actually having these devastating impacts.”

Tindall says educating and informing the non-farming public is their primary focus.
