Next Steps in the National Western Center Complex

On Tuesday, Denver voters passed Ballot Measure 2C which will create the National Western Center, a year-round education, recreation and entertainment venue that will be the permanent home for the National Western Stock Show. The City of Denver — is partnering with Colorado State University, History Colorado, Museum of Nature and Science, and National Western Stock Show Association.Executive Director of the North Denver Cornerstone Initiative Kelly Leid shares more about the next steps in this exciting endeavor.
Leid: “Now what we will be doing — there are two critical path items that we will be focusing on. First is land acquisition —right now we sit at about 130 acres that we own between the City and the National Western. The full buildout of the plan is 270 acres. So our first effort will be land acquisition so we make sure we control all the land within the boundaries of the new campus. So that is step one and that will probably take us a full year. So at the end of 2016,our hope is to have all if not most of the land under our control.”
Leid continues with the second focus
Leid: “The short line railroad that links the two main railroads — the Burlington Northern and the UP. They have a set of tracks that run along the South Platte River. We have a mile of the South Platte that runs through the National Western. We need to consolidate those tracks off the river and next to a set of existing tracks that run down the center of the site. We have to have free access to the river. So that is really our second critical path item.”
