Organic Survey & Carbon Fuels Standard

Organic Survey & Carbon Fuels Standard. I’m Greg Martin with today’s Northwest Report.

Small and mid-sized organic farmers were the focus of a study on how to improve their abilities to market their product. Miles McElvoy of the National Organic Program explains one of the recommendations available.

MCELVOY: To get resources to help smaller farmers bundle their products into groups so that they could work with other growers to sell into a CSA type of a model. There’s models like that around the United States and they’ve been very beneficial where you don’t have a small farm taking on all the marketing responsibilities but they can work with other growers in a cooperative manner to get their products into a more direct marketing channels, get a higher price for their product so those kinds of things can be very beneficial for small and medium sized farms.

The state of California’s Office of Administrative Law has approved the Low Carbon Fuels Standard for implementation. Bob Dinneen, president of the Renewable Fuels Association says, serious and substantial concerns remain about the methodology and motives of the state's Air Resources Board staff in drafting this standard. According to Dinneen, ARB failed to fulfill its statutory obligations under California law. Growth Energy CEO Tom Buis is also disappointed. He says at a minimum, OAL should have sent the flawed regulation back to the Air Resources Board with direction they start over.

Now here’s today’s Washington Grange Report.
