USDA has announced plans to purchase more than $57 million worth of fresh citrus, and California growers are expected to see a significant share of the benefit.

The Agricultural Marketing Service plans $57.5 million in fresh citrus purchases through USDA’s Section 32 procurement program. That includes $20 million in fresh oranges, $12.5 million in grapefruit, and $25 million in mandarins.

Section 32 allows USDA to purchase domestically produced agricultural products for distribution through food banks, schools, and other nutrition assistance programs. For growers, those purchases can also help move surplus fruit, reduce available inventory, and support market conditions.

California Citrus Mutual says it has been advocating for fresh citrus to remain a priority within the program.

CCM Governmental Affairs Director Jacob Villagomez called the announcement “a substantial investment in the U.S. citrus industry,” adding that it comes at an important time for growers.

And as the nation’s leading producer of fresh citrus, CCM says California is expected to benefit significantly, particularly from USDA’s $25 million commitment to fresh mandarins.
