Walla Walla Sweet Onions 2026
From the Ag Information Network, I’m Bob Larson. If you are a fan of Walla Walla Sweet Onions and you haven’t had any of this great seasonal crop yet, your time is running out.
Mike Locati, president of the Walla Walla Sweet Onion Marketing Committee, says this year’s crop isn’t huge, but it’s a good one …
LOCATI … “So, some of the yield kind of shrank or shortened up by the amount of seed we had in some of the early fields, but the quality, I haven’t seen much better quality. I thought the onions held up. They had good legs. They were able to make it this far. They were solid. And I thought the taste was exceptional.”
But, Sweet onion harvest, Locati says is just about to wrap up …
LOCATI … “I would say, yeah, probably mid-August. You know, we’re probably getting there maybe the third week in August if there’s some stragglers. I mean they’ll hold up. The quality has been pretty good.”
And this year’s June 1st start of Sweet Onion harvest was the earliest Locati can remember …
LOCATI … “We started super early. I mean we started the first of June. We could have started even earlier than that. That was another thing about the winter. That might have helped out too. Thank God we didn’t have a huge hot, I mean it got hot, but it didn’t get super, super hot there in the summer in July.”
So, don’t wait, because this year’s crop, according to Locati, is mighty tasty …
LOCATI … “I mean the quality keeps them coming back. So, if we can do quality, I’m all, that’s all I really hope to do, like we all do.”
