Consumers across California are paying closer attention to protein these days, and dairy products are stepping into the spotlight right alongside meat, eggs, and protein shakes. According to information provided in a recent consumer-focused cheese nutrition feature, many popular cheeses pack a surprising amount of protein while also delivering calcium and flavor.

Ricotta cheese topped the list with 14 grams of protein in just a half cup, while cottage cheese offered 11 grams. Parmesan and Swiss cheese each delivered about 8 grams of protein per serving, and favorites like mozzarella and cheddar also made the list.

The report also highlighted that cheese contains complete protein because it comes from milk, naturally providing both casein and whey protein.

For California dairy producers, it is another reminder that consumers are increasingly viewing dairy foods not just as comfort foods, but as functional foods that can help support muscle recovery, satiety, and high-protein eating habits.
