For decades, almond hulls have mostly been known as a dependable livestock feed ingredient. But the Almond Board of California says a new development could create entirely new opportunities for growers.

According to the Board, almond hull powder has now been confirmed as Generally Recognized as Safe, or GRAS, for use in human food following a review by an independent expert panel.

In simple terms, that means experts determined the ingredient is safe for people to consume based on scientific evidence and extensive safety data. The review included more than 180 pages covering production methods, consumption estimates, and toxicology assessments.

The organization says the designation could eventually open doors for almond hulls to be used in products like baked goods, cereals, beverages, nutrition bars, and other food items.

The Almond Board of California says the move will not instantly change the market, but it could help create new demand streams and higher-value opportunities for growers while supporting sustainability goals tied to making full use of the almond crop.
