Week of Action at NFU Pt 2
From the Ag Information Network, I’m Bob Larson. This week, May 5-9, according to the National Farmers Union, is a Week of Action. That’s because, NFU President Rob Larew says Congress needs to act now, and at the top of the list is to ensure a brighter future for ag producers with a new, strong five year Farm Bill …
LAREW … “First of all, we need a modern, updated farm bill for today's times, and that means strengthening the farm safety net to provide more stability, build on very popular voluntary conservation programs, and restore some of the balance in the marketplace against the kind of monopoly powers out there. All of this is with fast and reliable crop insurance and other risk management programs. Quite frankly, we need a strong, broad farm bill that provides for both farmers and consumers."
Larew says we hear far too many stories from young producers who say the risks are too high and from the established farmers who are looking to get out …
LAREW … “This is bad news for our farm country and rural America, but also for the country and for our food security out there. So, for a lot of reasons, the fact is that, without action, we risk losing a generation of family farmers and ranchers, the stakes really couldn't be higher.”
