Bringing Locally Grown Foods to CNIP Participants
The California Department of Food and Agriculture’s Office of Farm to Fork has announced a $750,000 grant award to support the expansion of the California Nutrition Incentive Program (CNIP). This funding will be distributed across seven projects aimed at promoting the purchase and consumption of healthy, locally grown fruits, vegetables, and nuts among nutrition benefit clients.Under the new initiative, five grantees will deliver CNIP nutrition incentives and technical support across 100 Certified Farmers’ Markets in Los Angeles, the San Francisco Bay Area, and the counties of Marin, Butte, and Humboldt. For instance, Food Access LA has been awarded $276,160 to work with 11 markets in Los Angeles County, helping both consumers and farmers by providing necessary support and guidance.
In addition, two grantees are dedicated exclusively to offering technical assistance with the new electronic Farmers’ Market Cards. The Agriculture Institute of Marin, for example, received $28,968 to aid electronic benefit shoppers in the Bay Area.
