White House Worries Pt 1
From the Ag Information Network, I’m Bob Larson. Many in the ag industry are worried about what the Trump administration could mean for their livelihoods with concerns over things like new tariffs and the deportation of ag workers.Kam Quarles, CEO of the National Potato Council, says folks are rightfully asking questions, but it’s a bit early to let our imaginations run wild …
QUARLES … “If the threat of tariffs drives countries that we partner with, and in some cases compete with, if it drives them to the negotiating table where we can get a better deal overall for, selfishly for U.S. agriculture’s huge trade deficit, we can actually start balancing that trade deficit, that will be a very good thing.”
Especially, Quarles says where tariffs are concerned …
QUARLES … “I think that is one of the potential outcomes of the strategy that has been suggested is, the threat of tariffs may lead to lower tariffs through effective negotiations.”
But Quarles says nothing is guaranteed …
QUARLES … “Obviously, if you had massive tariffs go on just kind of wholesale across the United States and never come off, that’s an entirely different matter. But that hasn’t happened. So, I think we just have to give the administration the opportunity to actually implement their policies.”
Tune in tomorrow as we look at the possible deportation of much of our ag workforce.
