From the Ag Information Network, this is today’s Fruit Grower Report. With the increase of wildfires in recent years, the smoke damage to winegrapes has increased as well.

Now, the West Coast Smoke Exposure Task Force is launching a new website designed to help growers, winemakers and vintners with the latest research on the impacts of wildfire smoke …

SCHARLAU … “The unveiling of this website is really a culmination of industry collaboration over the past, well since 2019 frankly. And the information that’s on it has been driven by the industry.”

Vicky Scharlau, former Executive Director of the Washington Wine Industry Foundation, says it’s a west coast team effort …

SCHARLAU … “ARS, the Agricultural Research Service, and the university researchers from WSU, and OSU, and University of California at Davis have all worked together with the industry to identify what do we know, what don’t we know, what do we need to know, and really what are those critical, mitigating components that we need to be able to know more about so that we can help growers, but also vintners that are impacted by smoke.”

So, Scharlau says they want to get the word out about the website …

SCHARLAU … “Right now, it’s outreach and communication and trying to get as many people to publish and announce the fact that it exists as we can possibly find.”

Listen tomorrow for more on the new smoke exposure website for the wine industry.
