Upcoming Challenges Pt 1

I’m Bob Larson. Farming has NEVER been easy! That’s NEVER in all caps! And the past couple of years have ranked right up there with some of the strangest times.

Moving forward, Rabobank’s Steve Nicholson says they won’t only be navigating pandemic-related challenges, but regulatory changes surrounding sustainability that some see as giving consumers what they want …

NICHOLSON … “When you look at those, and I’m going to call them consumer-ready products, the consumer and that end-user’s going to say, I want organic, I want non-GMO, I want chemical-free, antibiotic-free, whatever the case may be, those are opportunities that farmers need to pay attention to.”

But what about those who just want to get back to “normal”? …

NICHOLSON … “I get it. We’ve been at this now two years almost. We’re tired, we’re fatigued, I just want to back to the way it used to be. I don’t know if that’s going to happen, whatever that new-normal is.”

And the challenges, Nicholson says may be part of that …

NICHOLSON … “I mean, there’s lots of challenges, but challenges always bring opportunities and I think we have to be ready for that. And that’s always, I tell the farmers, be ready for new opportunities. Don’t just shut the, well I’m a wheat and potato farmer. Well, maybe, maybe you ought to put more oil seed in that or something like that. So, be open to what’s coming down the pike at you.”

Nicholson says he’s optimistic we’ll learn to manage these new challenges as they become part of our “normal.”
