Fruit Bites for September 28 & 30 Mycorrhizae
AW: a quick recap, mycorrhizae are fungi with a symbiotic relationship to plants and help uptake nutrients and water. Valent has a line of MycoApply brands with mycorrhizae from Oregon. It is best to apply the mycorrhizae directly to the roots, usually at planting time.
BL: And what are some crops that you’ve studied this with?
AW: Apples are a great example. The trees have better growth and survival over the winter. For best results, apply during planting directly to the roots or come back with a drench application. You could apply in the fall or the spring. Mycorrhizae need about 60 days to fully colonize the root system. This entails the mycorrhizae creating a super fine fungal mat that expands the tree’s entire root system. You can even treat individual replants to help them establish in the orchard.
BL: Well, thanks Allison. Join us again next time for Fruit Bites, brought to you by Valent. Until then, I’m Bob Larson.
