BL: Welcome back to another “Fruit Bites” brought to you by Valent U.S.A. With us again is Valent’s Allison Walston. And this week Allison, we are talking about micro and macro nutrients and getting ready for winter.

AW: As we wrap up harvesting, thoughts of next spring seem so far away, but it’s time to start planning. After harvest, you have removed so many nutrients that are contained within the fruit, that you need to replace them for the tree to continue.

BL: what are the most important?

AW: the usual suspects, Nitrogen, Phosphorus and Potassium. But nutrients like Calcium, Boron and Zinc can also play a large role even in small quantities. Depending on if your trees are apples, pears or cherries, they each have different nutrient requirements.

BL: So a lot of nutrient applications occur post-harvest?

AW: Applying BEFORE harvest can decrease storability. After harvest helps get through winter and ready for the spring until the new leaves flush by supporting strong fruit buds, winter hardiness, and reducing the stress on trees.

BL: Well, thanks Allison. Join us again next time for Fruit Bites, brought to you by Valent. Until then, I’m Bob Larson.
