Candy Mountain AVA Pt 1
I’m Bob Larson. No, it’s not a board game from your childhood or the latest game app for your cell phone. Candy Mountain is the latest American Viticultural Area, or AVA, in the state of Washington. So, what does that mean? …
BRADSHAW … “So, an AVA is basically a geographical boundary that they can draw and they can say this is a specific growing region and they draw the boundaries around that really specific growing region.”
And, Washington State Wine Commission’s Heather Bradshaw says it wasn’t our only AVA designation last month …
BRADSHAW … “There was two in September, actually, Royal Slope and then Candy Mountain. And, these are the first two AVA’s that we’ve had in Washington since 2016. So, it’s an exciting time.”
But this newest AVA, Bradshaw says is not the biggest …
BRADSHAW … “Candy Mountain is our smallest AVA by a lot now. It’s only 815 acres and it’s within the larger Yakima Valley AVA which is within the larger Columbia Valley AVA.”
Candy Mountain, Bradshaw says is not new to the wine business …
BRADSHAW … “Some of our winemakers and growers have been growing fruit up there for a long time and they’re just thrilled to be able to label a bottle with the Candy Mountain AVA now. In about a month, they can start doing that.”
Tune in tomorrow for more on Washington’s newest AVA and what makes it so special.
