Honey consumption has significantly increased over the last decade, and that is sweet news for Colorado beekeepers and honey producers.

Honey consumption has doubled in the last ten years nationwide. Since 2008, Americans have increased our consumption from about a pound of honey a years to two pounds per person each year according to Margaret Lombard of the National Honey Board.

Lombard told USDA the growth of honey as a food ingredient over the last decade - one reason behind increased honey consumption over the last decade.

Colorado is home to 946 native bee species. Colorado State University Extension, CSU College of Agricultural Sciences and the Colorado Department of Agriculture are entering the 2nd year of a 3 year grant program to monitor honey bee health and educate hobby beekeepers new to the field of honey bee husbandry.

Colorado is at the leading edge of honey's popularity. Producers are creating and selling Honey beer and Honey Whiskey and Honey Hemp and CBD.
