Colorado's Sugar Beet Harvest

Colorado's Sugar Beet Harvest

Regional Sales Manager for BetaSeed Incorporated John Dillman provides an update of Colorado's sugar beet harvest.

Dillman: "Harvest went really well. The yields are above average and the sugar content is above average. That is contributed to the summer that we had with additional growing degree days and we had a very cooperative summer. That created more tons and more sugar and so the growers are very pleased. Of course — other than in the areas where they received some hail. So with the warm temperatures, the temperature of the root is too warm so they can only pile them up to approximately up to 52 or 55 degrees. So once the root temperature gets too warm, they have cease piling and wait til the next day til they cool back down. Due to that, harvest has been lengthened and extended longer than normal."

He continues by looking forward to next year's crop.

Dillman: "Hopefully we will get adequate snow in the mountains so we have irrigation water for next spring. Then we will be off to a good start again and hopefully have a record crop again next year. And with the varieties that we provide the growers, we provide the growers. We have good disease tolerance packages along with high sugar content and high tonnage. So we are ready to move forward and begin selling our seed here after Thanksgiving here through December."
