Agriculture Safety Day

Agriculture Safety Day

Agriculture Safety Day. I'm Greg Martin with Washington Ag Today.

Wenatchee is the site for the 12th Annual Agriculture Safety Day next Wednesday. Corwyn Fischer, Safety Director with the Washington State Farm Bureau gives us a little history on the event.

FISCHER: This was a dream of Burt Chestnut, who was on the Governor's Industrial Safety and Health Advisory Board years ago and the Governor's Board puts on a conference each year and they flip from Tacoma and back to Spokane but that conference is always in the end of September, first of part of October so you know what's going on that of year in agriculture and that's harvest season. We always thought it would be good to have a spinoff of that main conference and we came up with Ag Safety Day.

Twelve years later, Fischer says they have record attendance.

FISCHER: There's over 400. This is a great opportunity for employers and employees to attend. We have break out sessions in English and Spanish. Tractor safety, we've got how to fit and wear respirators safely, we have a four-hour session on process safety management. If you are in tree fruits or any other processing where you're putting your fruit in the CA building and using ammonia.

Fischer says there is a large trade show as well and even some open spots for exhibitors. You can register through the Farm Bureau website, wsfb.com.

And that's Washington Ag Today. I'm Greg Martin, thanks for listening on the Ag Information Network of the West.
