FEMA Denial & Understanding Bats

FEMA Denial & Understanding Bats

FEMA Denial & Understanding Bats. I'm Greg Martin with today's Northwest Report.

The fire season is ending but the damage from this years record fires is still be tallied. Congressman Dan Newhouse from Washington State is not happy with a recent FEMA decision.

NEWHOUSE: FEMA has denied individual assistance following the disaster declaration in those communities that were hit by wildfires. I met with FEMA officials this week after that decision expressing my deep disappointment and stressing the importance of improving the individual assistance program to help with wildfire victims and I will continue to work with the governor to ensure that the affected communities are provided with every available form of assistance they need to rebuild their homes, their businesses and their lives.

Guess this next one is just in time for Halloween but scientists in 31 states and 10 Canadian provinces are working to better understand bats and the role they play in everything from climate change, habitat loss and wind energy development. Bats are an effective deterrent for harmful bugs in orchards and fields. Researchers say the monitoring program has been spurred by a disease called white-nose syndrome that has killed millions of bats and is spreading. Very little is really known about the 150 some species of bats.

That's today's Northwest Report. I'm Greg Martin on the Ag Information Network of the West.
