On Wednesday Senate lawmakers voted 60-38 to approve Trade Promotion Authority (TPA), which defines objectives and priorities for trade agreements the United States negotiates and establishes consultation and notification requirements for the president to follow throughout the negotiation process. The House approved TPA last Thursday by a 218-208 vote. Congressman Dan Newhouse

NEWHOUSE: By being able to pass these trade bills on to the President what we've done is really open up a tremendous amount of opportunity and so I think it's just a huge amount of opportunity that we will see from this, great benefits and at the same time because of the TPA Congress will have a much greater oversight, much more say in what any trade agreements look like

It took some doing but the immigration debacle at the border has been cleared up, at least for the moment. The State Department, working with the Department of Homeland Security – Customs and Border Protection cleared the current backlog of visas for farm workers destined for Washington and California. The next test will come next week, where wafla alone has scheduled 624 appointments for Monday and Tuesday, representing nearly 40 percent of the total Mexico H-2A visa requests for next week.
