Feeding Fido

Feeding Fido. I'm Greg Martin with today's Line On Agriculture.

The pet food industry has had some challenges in recent years with tainted imported ingredients. Derek Martin, Director of Sales for 3D Corporate Solutions says they are using potatoes to help fill fido's tummy.

MARTIN: Well essentially we're taking the offal that's coming out of potato producing facilities and we take that product and we will dry it and then grind it and this is put into a meal form and it's used in a wide variety of pet food applications.

He says this is not really a new idea.

MARTIN: I think maybe there's getting to be a little more familiarity with it. If you look at some of the higher end pet food stores you can actually see potatoes listed on the labels and so I think it's getting a little bit more notoriety that potato has a functionality in the production of the pet food because the starch does provide the binding characteristics that are needed.

Potatoes are very high in vitamin C and potassium and have no fat, sodium or cholesterol.

MARTIN: There's no doubt that besides the functionality in the formula that the potato provides a lot of nutritional benefits for the companion animal. The use of it in the pet food application actually provides a higher revenue for the product. Find out more about 3D Corporate Solutions at www.3dcorpsol.com.
