No Moo Tax!
Given today’s political climate, legal victories in the livestock sector are few and far between, one reason South Dakota producers are celebrating. I’m Susan Allen stay tuned on today’s American Rancher for the story. Thanks to the efforts Senator’s John Thune and Charles Schumer a provision in the Fiscal year 2010 Interior and Environment Appropriations Bill will now protect livestock producers, the rural economy and yes even consumers from a silly cow tax. It’s refreshing to see common sense prevail despite aggressive moves by the EPA to create a permit system that would include natural livestock emission under the Clean Air Act. And naturally...forgive the pun again we have the Obama administration attempting to push an Endangerment Finding that would ultimately pave the way for the regulation of cattle emissions. Senator Thune had the intensity of a good border collie while monitoring the EPA’s every move concerning livestock, and was able to point out in a bipartisan manner the subtle progression that could lead to a cow tax. In South Dakota alone a cow tax would cost farmers and ranchers $175 per dairy cow $87.50 a beef cow and $20.00 a hog . (Who comes up with to $87.50?) The combined total would squeeze another $367million out of the states struggling livestock producers. David takes on the jolly green giant and wins one for the ranchers. Isn’t that great!
