Wolf Controversy

Wolf Controversy

An article in a local newspaper got me thinking about wolves and the controversy they can cause. I'm Jeff Keane; I'll be right back with some of my thoughts.A recent article in our local newspaper reported on the suspected killing of a wolf from a newly discovered wolf pack in North central Washington. The gray wolf pack is believed to be the first in the state in about 70 years. Local livestock owners were not thrilled with the news, but wolf lovers were ecstatic. It seems now the wolf pack has some missing numbers. No arrests have been made but a wolf pelt was discovered being shipped to Canada so officials are investigating. An environmental group, Conservation Northwest, is so upset they are calling for an immediate arrest an full prosecution of a suspect. I wonder if a wolf was suspected of killing domestic livestock this same group would call for the immediate capture and swift, harsh justice for that wolf? My bet would be a monitoring period and rehabilitation for the naughty wolf. One statement by a spokesperson for Conservation Northwest really caught my attention - "It outrages me that they don't think of the fact that these animals are a treasure to a majority of the people in the state." Well, I'll tell you they are a treasure to the majority because the majority doesn't have to put up with the killing of their pets, livestock and the majority does not witness the decimation of wildlife herds as wolf packs grow in number and boldness. Talk to the minority in any state that harbors wolves and you will get a different description than a "treasure." I'm Jeff Keane.
