08/01/07 New Fruit Coming

New Fruit Coming. I'm Greg Martin with today's Fruit Grower Report. I love walking through the fruit & produce aisle at the local grocery store to browse through the new or unusual varieties of fruit available and it seems like there have been some great tasting choices lately. According to Alan Taylor with E.W. Brandt & Sons, several new varieties are creating some excitement. TAYLOR: Well we've got a number of things we've been looking at. It's really exciting that we were able to taste them and market them, one of them being the Amber Jewel" plum which is a new product that comes by way of Australia. It's a very sweet plum which has soluble solids or natural sugar that ranges from 16 to 25% so it's very sweet and it also comes with some vitamins and minerals that are good for you. In addition to the new Amber Jewel, Taylor says a new series of peaches and nectarines. TAYLOR: We also have the HALO" series of peaches and nectarines and these are the ones we've been seeing more of in the store lately. They can be called the flat fruit or Donuts" or Saturns". The interesting thing about the HALO" series I think is the fact that it contains flat nectarines where the others have been peaches and this particular series has a couple of interesting nectarines; one of them has yellow flesh called Necta Fire" and another one that is white fleshed inside and that's called Necta Snow". I'm looking forward to trying them soon. That's today's Fruit Grower Report. I'm Greg Martin on the Northwest Ag Information Network.
