Tree Fruit Industry at Apple Cup. I'm Greg Martin with today's Fruit Grower Report.
Students attending University of Washington and Washington State University scored a big win at this weekend's Apple Cup thanks to members of Washington's tree fruit industry. The Washington Apple Education Foundation made an $8000 donation to the presidents' scholarships funds at UW and WSU. The annual donation, titled Apple Cup scholarship, will be awarded by the Universities to students demonstrating academic excellence and for overall merit.
The scholarships were awarded during the President's Pre-Game reception attended by supporters and regents of the universities, including Washington State Governor Christine Gregoire. Representing the industry were member of the WAEF board of directors Ted Smith and WAEF executive director Jennifer Witherbee. The two thanked the presidents of both universities for their leadership in education during the reception.
In total, the Washington Apple Education Foundation awarded 73 students with direct scholarships this year and over the last twelve years has provided support of over $1 million to industry young people.
The Washington Apple Education Foundation fosters educational opportunities, encourages academic excellence and promotes awareness of the values of Washington's tree fruit industry. For more information about the organization, visit www.waef.org
