WSU Homegrown Tour
From the Ag Information Network, I’m Bob Larson with today’s Fruit Grower Report. If you’re a fan of the Cougars,
Northwest Cherries, or pears grown in Washington and Oregon, July has been a special month with the WSU Homegrown Tour.
Northwest Cherry Grower’s president, Eric Patrick says it’s been a lot of fun so far …
PATRICK … “We’re really excited to be a part of the Washington State University Homegrown Tour. Northwest Cherries has partnered along with USA Pears on the summer part of this tour which started in Pullman in mid-July and, like you said, we’ve hit Skagit County last week and also Yakima.”
Patrick says there are two more stops for the tour coming up …
PATRICK … “August 1st at the Tacoma Rainiers game, and then we’ll be in the Beaverton area at the Nike campus actually”
That stop at Nike is on August 4th.
The Homegrown Tour, Patrick says this effort is to help support our state’s land-grant university …
PATRICK … “WSU is so critical to our success in agriculture and all the extension offices. So, we’ve been going out to these different places with fresh cherries and fresh pears and just helping spread the word that, you know, it’s cherry season.”
But Patrick says the timing is perfect …
PATRICK … “Now, fresh pears have just started harvest, actually this week, so we’re excited to be out there partnering with WSU, which is an ag-based school and just getting the word out and just letting more people see, you know, the fruits of the labor from this state.”
NW Cherries represents more than 2,200 cherry growers across the Pacific Northwest. USA Pears represents hundreds of family pear growers throughout Washington and Oregon.
