What's in USDA's New Cotton Plan?
If you're involved in California cotton, there's a new USDA proposal that's getting quite a bit of attention across the industry. The department recently released what it's calling the Great American Cotton Plan. Similar to goals we've seen the Administration express for other commodities, the proposal aims to strengthen the cotton farm economy by boosting demand for American-grown cotton, supporting domestic textile manufacturing, expanding export opportunities, and improving the competitiveness of U.S. cotton.
The announcement comes as USDA projects significant financial losses across the cotton sector this year. Not surprisingly, industry groups are paying attention. The National Cotton Council has welcomed the proposal, and the California Cotton Ginners and Growers Association has shared details of the plan with its members.
Now, it's important to note that this is a plan, not a check in the mail. But USDA says it intends to coordinate efforts across multiple agencies and partners to support the cotton supply chain, from the farm gate to textile manufacturing and export markets.
