Cosmic Boom
From the Ag Information Network, I’m Bob Larson with today’s Fruit Grower Report. In the six years since the Cosmic Crisp apple hit the market, its popularity is soaring.Jeremy Tamsen, senior director of innovation and entrepreneurship within WSU’s Office of Research, says nobody realized how big it would become …
TAMSEN … “We didn’t know at WSU, and the industry didn’t know at that time what a smash hit Cosmic Crisp was going to become. And in the face of that heavy investment from growers in the Cosmic Crisp production, we want to make sure that we’re giving them as much “bang for their buck”, essentially, as possible.”
But since Tamsen began his job at WSU in 2022 the Cosmic Crisp has gone beyond anyone’s expectation …
TAMSEN … “Looking backs to those notes, Oh, you know, you guys might have demand for, you know, five million trees in the long run, you know, they were kind of warning us that we needed to up the availability, up the ability of nurseries to produce commercial trees. Well, there are now more than 22.5 million trees in Washington.”
So, Tamsen says if you haven’t tried the Cosmic Crisp yet …
TAMSEN … “One thing I’d like to point out to listeners is that you can visit www.cosmiccrisp.com and there is a store locator there that you can find a store near you to buy apples, Cosmic Crisp apples from Washington.”
Again, that’s Jeremy Tamsen, from WSU’s Office of Research.
