Sheep numbers.
When your in Idaho, you’re in sheep country. Annual sheep drives, the history of sheep herders, sheep festivals… remind us all of the importance of this industry. Here’s Travis Averill of the National Agricultural Statistics Service providing updates on inventories of sheep and goats. As in January 1st all sheep and lambs in the US is at 4,990,000, head down 7/10 of a percent from 2025 total since January 1st. All goats and kids in the United States is at 2,509,000. Head up 6/10 of a percent from 2025 total. Speaker1: Other notable details from the reports. The 2025 lamb crop came in slightly lower than the crop the year prior. Last year's kid goat crop was reported 1% higher than 2024, and a trade off of meat goat inventory up 2% year over year, and Milk Goat inventory down 1% from one year ago.Sheep and lambs. The top five states, Texas and Colorado, are up from 2025, whereas other three states are down in inventory from previous year for the 32 published states. Ten states are increasing from previous year. 20 states are decreasing from 2022 States are unchanged from last year. So for the January 1st, breeding sheep and lambs are at 3,610,000, head down 1.4% from last year. The replacement lambs are at 600,000, head down 2.4% from 2025 years, are at 2,850,000, head down 1% from last year. The Rams are at 160,000, down 3%. The 2025 lamb crop was at 3,030,000, head down 3/10 of a percent from previous year.
