Generations on the Land
Got deep roots in Alabama soil? The Alabama Department of Agriculture and Industries is once again honoring families who’ve kept their farms in operation for a century—or even two. Applications are now open for the 2025 Century & Heritage Farm and Bicentennial Farm programs.Century Farms must have been in the same family for at least 100 years, be at least 40 acres in size, and still have active agricultural operations. Heritage Farms also require a century of family operation, along with historic structures and a strong tie to Alabama’s agricultural story. And for those rare family farms that have lasted 200 years or more, the Bicentennial Farm designation stands as one of the state’s highest honors.
To date, more than 700 farms have been recognized through these programs, including 20 that hit the 200-year mark. It’s one way Alabama pays tribute to the families who’ve helped feed and grow our state for generations.
