Trade War 2025 Pt 2
From the Ag Information Network, this is today’s Fruit Grower Report. With Mexico and Canada agreeing to sit down and talk with U.S. officials on what can be done about drug trafficking and illegal immigration, the tariff threat has been delayed until March 4th.But U.S. Representative Dan Newhouse offers a word of caution for America’s agricultural industry …
NEWHOUSE … “Particularly now, with farmers facing such difficult challenges, that we about in our first Agriculture Committee hearing, this would be a very difficult time to absorb those retaliatory tariffs, limiting our access to foreign markets. That’s my word of caution, always has been, and we repeat that to this administration as well.”
And the retaliation, Newhouse says always seems to target our ag industry …
NEWHOUSE … “We have seen that happen in the past. There’s a history of this so I, you know, it’s not an unbased fear that I have. It’s just the reality of dealing with other nations that retaliation typically occurs.”
So, Newhouse says we just need to proceed with caution …
NEWHOUSE … “The President has used these tactics successfully before and, it looks to me at least in the short term, he’s had some success this year as well. But March 4th is coming quickly, and we’ll see what happens on the part of Mexico and Canada.”
As a member of the House Ag Committee, Newhouse says this is a priority focus.
