From the Ag Information Network, this is today’s Fruit Grower Report. The tariffs President Trump threatened to impose on Mexico and Canada have been paused after both nation’s agreed to sit down and see what could done to prevent drug trafficking and illegal border crossings.

U.S. Representative Dan Newhouse says tariffs can be a useful tool …

NEWHOUSE … “Certainly they can do a lot to change or redirect other country’s actions and things that they focus on whether it’s their ability to control their borders in this case with Mexico and, to a smaller extent, Canada.”

In this case, Newhouse says the tariffs have been delayed at least until March 4th …

NEWHOUSE … “And it looks like to me at least, in the short term, very successfully as Mexico and Canada have both stepped up to do more to control the illegal fentanyl trade specifically and the allowing of illegal aliens to cross our borders.”

However, Newhouse says there are no guarantees …

NEWHOUSE … “I do have a cautionary note always with tariffs because, historically, if we impose tariffs on another country, a lot of times we will see a retaliatory effort on their part. And nine times out of ten the target for those retaliations are right at America’s breadbasket, our agricultural economy.”

Tune in tomorrow for more on the potential trade war with our neighbors and two of our biggest trading partners Mexico and Canada.
