Fixing a "Radically Inefficient" Food System
“Radically inefficient” is an uncomfortable phrase when used to describe our United States food system, but it is what is being used by ReFED, a U.S.-based nonprofit working to pinch off food waste…“Imagine you’re walking out of the supermarket with three bags filled to the brim with groceries. As you make your way to the car, instead of loading all three of those bags into your trunk, you’re just going to toss one into the dumpster.”
Minnie Ringland is on staff at ReFED. When I spoke with her this week, she acknowledged that sounded nuts but said that it is exactly what is happening…
“In the U.S., over 1/3 of our food supply – 38% – of all food goes unsold or uneaten and that equals almost 149 billion meals.”
If you want to make in impact, how’s this? Don’t get lazy with Thanksgiving!
“What we call our ‘Food Waste Five’ are: plan ahead, store properly, freeze-freeze-freeze, learn your labels, and leftovers.”
According to ReFED, 58 percent of the food wasted on Thanksgiving will come from just two holiday staples: turkey and milk. To put this in perspective, the amount of wasted turkey alone is equivalent to discarding about 8.2 million whole turkeys.
