FORESTS Act Pt 1

From the Ag Information Network, I’m Bob Larson. A “common-sense approach” to forest management could be on the way if a new bill passes muster.

Washington Republicans Kathy McMorris Rodgers and Dan Newhouse introduced Fostering Opportunities for Resources and Education Spending through Timber Sales Act in the House of Representatives …

NEWHOUSE … “I think the FORESTS Act, by encouraging this proactive management style, I think is absolutely timely and I think support for, as you described it before, common sense solution, I think will grow.”

Newhouse says they tried the FORESTS Act last session for the first time …

NEWHOUSE … “It did not get very far, unfortunately, but things continue to worsen, summers are dry, the catastrophic fires grow every summer and people are realizing that we’ve got to be as creative as we possibly can be. And reducing the threat of these fires.”

Newhouse says we’ve watched millions of acres burn in recent years …

NEWHOUSE … “Losing the resources on those lands, but also a tremendous amount of property damage and loss of life as well. So, the support for this does continue to grow, and I’m optimistic that we can get some movement.”

Tune in tomorrow for more on the FORESTS Act and how it would improve our forest management and the communities involved.
